Pip spends his days hanging around with Estella. Estella is being “introduced to society” by the rich friend. Estella uses him to make other boys jealous. Soon they decide to visit Miss Havisham together. Miss Havisham is delighted to see Estella and asks about Pip and Estella. Miss Havisham asks about all those boys that Estella has “used”. Pip realises that Estella was just a tool but still convinces himself that he will marry her. Estella then goes ahead and unlinks her arm from Miss Havisham which is followed by Miss Havisham calling Estella cold and demands her love. Estella responds that she can’t give what she doesn’t have. Pip decides to get away and goes for a walk, when he’s back he finds Estella knitting at Miss Havisham’s feet. It was like nothing happened. One day when Pip is hanging out with Drummle, he tells Pip that he is totally into Estella and he is not lying. Pip gets angry and demands evidence. Drummle then shows a note that Estella had written him. At a party later on, Pip watched Drummle flirt with Estella all night. Pip confronts Estella and asks why someone like Drummle. Pip then realises that he doesn’t stand a chance with Estella.

Great Expectations: Chapter 37 Summary
The next Sunday, Pip decides to visit Wemmick. When he arrives, Wemmick’s father greets him and tells him that Wemmick is out. Meanwhile, Pip and Wemmick’s father enjoy each others company. He then exclaims that his son is home. Pip meets Wemmick and he salutes to him even though he is close enough to shake his hand. Wemmick comes in with a girl, Miss Skiffins. Pip asks Wemmick advice on how to help out Herbert without him knowing. They sit around a fire and Wemmick tries to sneak his hand around Miss Skiffin’s waist. Soon Pip leaves to go home.
Great Expectations: Chapter 36 Summary
Its Pip’s 21st birthday and he looks forward to receiving money as he has been running low. Mr Jagger’s invites Pip in to his office and explains that he will receive a huge present. Pip will now receive 500 pounds a year, and Pip is excited. Pip then asks Wemmick for some advice and tells him that he is thinking of lending a certain friend money. Wemmick tells him never to lend anyone money. Pip asks if that answer was from a friend or a businessman and he says the latter. Wemmick says if wants to hear the answer from a friends point of view he should come to Wemmick’s house in Walworth.
Great Expectations: Chapter 35 Summary
Pip is completely shattered from the news. It was the first death he had encountered in his adult life. He believes Orlick was the cause of her death. Pip is at the funeral all the family members act like they would usually. Afterwards, Joe and Pip talk about old times. Soon Pip and Biddy do the same and Pip learns the last word Mrs Joe said was “Pip”. Pip also finds out Orlick has been too close to biddy and gets angry.. Pip then says he will come home often and take care of everyone although Biddy doesn’t believe him. Pip is annoyed at Biddy for thinking that. Biddy gives Pip milk and bread for the trip back and apologises for hurting his feelings. Pip leaves and promises to be back soon.
Great Expectations: Chapter 34 Summary
Pip is still thinking about Joe while also wishing he didn’t meet Miss Havisham so he wouldn’t have all these troubles. Meanwhile, Pip is also spending quite a large sum of money and being a bad influence on Herbert. Herbert was also spending alot of money due to Pip. Pip and Herbert have to start eating less and less and things aren’t looking so good. Pip and Herbert decide to calculate their debts. When they’re done, they find a note slipped under the door. Pip opens it and find that his sister Mrs.Joe had passed and her funeral would be on Monday.
Great Expectations: Chapter 33 Summary
Estella arrives fully in fur material clothes. She tells Pip that they would ride the carriage to her new home and she would pay for everything. They take a short break before heading out on the carriage where they sit and had some overpriced snacks. Estella tells Pip all about her sad and unfair childhood. Suddenly, Pip kisses Estella’s hand and then on the cheek, she acts like nothing happened. Estella tells Pip of her plans and a rich friend who will introduce Estella to society. Estella then asks Pip to visit often and they say goodbye. Estella is welcomed by her maids and her rich house. Pip at this time, is heartbroken, he arrives at the Pocket’s home and sees Jane Pocket walking around with her boyfriend and Pip gets jealous. Pip feels the need for a friend to cheer him up.
Great Expectations: Chapter 32 Summary
Pip gets a note telling him to pick up Estella. He waits at the carriage house in case Estella arrives early. On the day, Pip shows up 5 hours early, he runs into Wemmick who offers him to join him on a short visit the Newgate Prison. They arrive and Pip realises that Wemmick is greatly admired in by the prisoners and prison guards. The prison guards ask questions on Jaggers but he refuses to answer. They leave and Pip regrets going to visit as he now smelt like the prison. Soon enough Estella arrives.
Great Expectations: Chapter 31 Summary
Pip and Herbert go to the theatre together, as Mr Wopsle is playing Hamlet. When the play is over, Pip and Herbert give Mr Wopsle a standing ovation. Although they found more funny than impressing. They try to sneak out but is caught by a man who brings them to Mr Wopsle’s dressing room, where they cannot stop laughing. They invite Mr Wopsle to dinner and he talks until 2am about his road to becoming famous. Pip goes to sleep dreaming and thinking about Estella.
Great Expectations: Chapter 30 Summary
The next morning Pip explains that Orlick is not a good person and Jaggers promises he will have Orlick fired. Pip is worried Orlick might not be too happy with him but Jaggers was sure to do it. Pip gets ready to leave the town. Pip arrives home and tells Herbert all about Estella and his love for her. Herbert tells Pip he doesn’t believe that they’re the right match. This saddens Pip greatly. Herbert tells Pip all about a girl named Clara that he is planning to marry. Although Mrs Pocket isn’t too please with her.
Great Expectations: Chapter 29 Summary
Pip is extremely excited to see Estella. He goes for a walk before going to her house. Pip believes him and Estella are meant to be. Pip knocks on Miss Havisham’s gate and Orlick, the new gatekeeper, opens the door. Pip goes in and finds Miss Havisham in the living room with a lady. It was Estella. They go for a walk but Estella cannot remember all the stories of them as a child. They go to the brewery and see a ghost. Pip pretends not to be scared. They go back inside and Estella leaves to help out with dinner. Miss Havisham demands Pip to love Estella. Suddenly Jaggers shows up. They eat dinner awkwardly and Miss Havisham asks Pip to escort Estella from London to Richmond when she comes to town in a few weeks. Pip is ecstatic. Pip goes to bed thinking him and Estella are meant to be.
