 “I was always treated as if I had insisted on being born in opposition to the dictates of reason, religion, and morality, and against the arguments of my best friends.” Pip says this as he is angry  with his upbringing. It shows great significance as it sets Pips mindset through half of the story until he gains more confidence. This sums up Pips emotions about himself after he had his heart broken by Estella. It shows us a sense of guilt  and that in Pips mind, the world despises of his existence. He could also have gained this mindset from being treated poorly by someone.

Pip – “I was always treated as if I had insisted on being born in opposition to the dictates of reason, religion, and morality, and against the arguments of my best friends.” 4

Pip – “We were equals afterwards, as we had been before; but, afterwards at quiet times when I sat looking at Joe and thinking about him, I had a new sensation of feeling conscious that I was looking up to Joe in my heart.” 7

Pip – “In the little world in which children have their existence, whosoever brings them up, there is nothing so finely perceived and so finely felt, as injustice.” 8

Joe – “If you can’t get to be o’ncommon through going straight, you’ll never get to do it through going crooked.” 9

Pip – ” . . . it felt very sorrowful and strange that this first night of my bright fortunes should be the loneliest I had ever known.” 18

Herbert – ” no man who was not a true gentleman at heart, ever was, since the world began, a true gentleman in manner” 22

Estella – “‘So,’ said Estella, ‘I must be taken as I have been made. The success is not mine, the failure is not mine, but the two together make me.” 38

Mr Jaggers – “And the communication I have got to make is, that he has great expectations.” 18

One significant ironic situation is when Miss Havisham teaches Estella to not love anyone in the beginning of the book although afterwards in chapter 44, Estella tells Miss Havisham that she doesn’t love her anymore which goes against anything that she taught her because she also taught Estella that the only person she should love is her, and that she should break all men’s hearts. This is an ironic situation which shows that they’re are unintentionally being ironic. This isn’t an ironic sentence but an ironic situation when looking at the whole book.

“Skull I cracked with this poker like the claw of the lobster”. This quote has a denotation of him crushing the skull forcefully and easily. Although, the connotation is that as a lobster is quick, fast and without effort, this shows that he is strong and didn’t without effort.
