Great Expectations: Chapter 50 Summary

Pip’s left arm had suffered very bad injuries but his right arm had been minor. Herbert visits him and helps him clean and dress the wound. While Pip had been away Herbert tells Pip that he heard from Magwitch that he had been married. He had been married to a crazy woman who was jealous and killed another woman and threatened to kill her own daughter. This is obviously the same story by Wemmick. Compeyson knew this story and used it to blackmail Magwitch.  Pip realises the obvious.

Great Expectations: Chapter 49 Summary

Pip goes back to the village where he finds Miss Havisham again. This time alone. Although she looks different. A little afraid and lonely. Pip requests for £900 for Herbert’s career. Miss Havisham is willing to hand over the money and is also willing to do whatever Pip requires her to do. Pip then says he doesn’t want money. Miss Havisham begs for Pip’s forgiveness and Pip exclaims that he has already. Pip tells her that he is unable to hold a grudge against anybody. Miss Havisham continues to tell him how she did not realise the things she had done. She says she did not realise until Pip expressed his love to Estella. She says that she relates to Pip. Pip tells Miss Havisham that she should try and heal Estella’s emotionless self. Pip asks how Miss Havisham found Estella and she tells him that she asked Jaggers to find him a daughter and he did. He brought Estella to Miss Havisham. Pip leaves the house and decides to walk in the ruined garden. He goes to the old brewery and hallucinates seeing Miss Havisham hanging like a witch. Pip decides to go and check on Miss Havisham once more. He peeks into the room and sees her wedding dress had caught fire. Pip runs and tries to put out the fire by wrapping her in a table cloth on the wedding table. Everything falls over and Pip holds the tablecloth on her until the fire is out. They call a doctor and one shows up while Miss Havisham lies on the wedding table. Pip realises that his arm had been burned but Miss Havisham’s injuries are a lot worse.The next morning Pip says goodbye to Miss Havisham as he leaves and kisses her on the lips.

Great Expectations: Chapter 48 Summary

One day after rowing for ages on end, Pip feels a little depressed. Pip runs into Jaggers on the street and Jaggers invites him out to dinner. Pip accepts the invitation. At Jaggers house, Wemmick finally contacts him and passes a message from Miss Havisham which tells him to come and visit. Jaggers reveals that Estella had been married to Drummle and that he may start hurting her. Pip gets very surprised and heartbroken. Pip notices Molly the housekeeper and notices that her gestures are very similar to Estella’s. Pip decides to ignore it for now. As Pip walks home with Wemmick, Pip asks for Molly’s story. Wemmick goes ahead and tells him that Molly was one of Jagger’s clients back a long time ago. She was extremely attractive. She was also accused of murdering another woman out of jealousy. This woman was found dead in a barn. Jaggers helped her and dressed her up in a childish outfit to use the argument that she is too small and weak to murder someone at court. It was also suspected that Molly had killed her child so this was used against her. In the end, Jaggers managed to free Molly and prove her innocent, by telling the court of the real murder and not one she was suspected for. Due to this, she went and worked as Jagger’s housekeeper. Pip asks the gender of the child and Wemmick replies that she is a girl. Pip is extremely confused.

Great Expectations: Chapter 47 Summary

As a month passes, Pip does not receive any word from Wemmick. Herbert is in need of money and Pip hands over his wallet as he would feel bad if he asked Magwitch. In addition, Pip asks Herbert not to mention the name Estella again. Meanwhile, Pip is also rowing and rowing while waiting for the command from Wemmick. One night, Late February, Pip takes himself out for a movie and dinner. Afterwards, he goes to see Mr Wopsle performing in a Christmas Pantomime.Pip spots Mr Wopsle staring at him during the play. Afterwards, Mr Wopsle tells Pip that he saw a ghost figure sitting behind Pip. Pip gets a little scared by this. Mr Wopsle claims him to be Compeyson but does not know who he is. Pip tells Herbert and Wemmick about the situation and they decide to be cautious from now on.

Great Expectations: Chapter 46 Summary

Pip tries to find Clara’s house but gets lost. He eventually finds it. Pip heads in and finds Clara’s dad making growling noises as he is an alcoholic. Clara is very attractive and it is noticeable that her and Herbert love each other. Pip gets closer with Magwitch but tells him that they won’t be able to communicate often. Although he tells him that they can communicate through Herbert. Magwitch gives himself a new name; Mr Campbell to avoid trouble. Pip and Herbert think of a plan to get Magwitch out of the country. The plan is; Pip will make rowing a hobby and one day he will pick Magwitch up and row away to another country. Pip is fond of the idea but keeps having a feeling where he feels he is being watched.

Great Expectations: Chapter 45 Summary

After the warning note, Pip goes to a close by roach motel where he spends the night mostly awake. In the morning, Pip heads for Wemmick’s castle. Wemmick explains that his apartment was being watched and searched as the reason for then note. Wemmick moved Magwitch to Clara’s House, so that Pip can still communicate with Herbert. Wemmick warns Pip to be careful from now on and to stay away from Magwitch. Pip also finds out that Compeyson is in town. Pip is tired, he falls asleep by the fire. Later on in the day, they have dinner.

Great Expectations: Chapter 44 Summary

In this Chapter, Pip arrives at Satis house and finds Miss Havisham and Estella sitting by the fire. He tells the two that he has found out who his benefactor is. Pip questions Miss Havisham whether Pip was used all those years ago. Miss Havisham says yes. After Pip gets upset, Miss Havisham exclaims that she does not have to be kind to anyone. Pip expresses his love to Estella right in front of Miss Havisham. Estella does not reply but shakes her head. Pip does not get upset and appears to be very understanding. He explains that since bad things have happened to her, she may not realise when others are unhappy. Miss Havisham is touched. Estella replies and says that she is emotionless. Estella says she still will marry Drummle although she does not feel any love towards him or anyone else. Estella asks if Pip is a boy or a man. Pip then gives a speech to answer the question. Everyone seems silent and is quite astonished by this. He leaves Satis House but does not want to go back to his hometown fo fear of seeing Drummle. In this case he walks back to London. As he crosses London Bridge, the clock ticks to midnight. As he reaches his apartment, the porter hands him a note reading “Don’t Go Home”.

Great Expectations: Chapter 43 Summary

Pip starts to be concerned that Compeyson may be looking for Magwitch and this puts him in danger.Pip talks to Herbert and tells him that he needs to see Estella and Miss Havisham before he leaves with Magwitch. Pip sets off to find Estella but by the time he gets there, she had disappeared. She was at Satis House.  Pip finds this a little mysterious. Instead of telling Magwitch that they need to flee as they are in danger, Pip tells him that they’re going on an expedition. Pip then tells him that they are going home to see Joe. Pip arrives back at his home village where he sees Bentley Drummle. They sit down and have breakfast together where Drummle tells Pip all about how his hometown has been since he had left. Pip gets very annoyed and bored. Drummle tells Pip that he will having dinner with Estella and Pip gets angry. He watches Drummle jump onto a horse and head off. Soon after Pip heads off to Satis House.

Great Expectations: Chapter 42 Summary

Magwitch tells Pip and Herbert all about his whole life. It turns out that Magwitch has been punished many times. He tells them about when he was an orphan, he was so hungry he had to steal turnips so he wouldn’t starve. He was taken in by many families but each time, he was kicked out. He told them of how he likes to get things done and how he taught himself to read and write. Twenty years ago, Magwitch met a man called Compeyson, dressed like a gentleman but we find out he really wasn’t a gentlemen. Compeyson was a bad influence to Magwitch and they committed many crimes together. Compeyson also knew someone else called Arthur. Arthur was sick and crazy when Magwitch had started working with them. Magwitch was told of Compeyson’s many stories including stories of how they swindled a rich lady and took alot of money. Compeyson had a gambling addiction and that money was gone. Arthur was ill and soon died.

Pip and Herbert are told of how Compeyson had used him to do all of his dirty work while not giving him much of the money they had earned. Magwitch also talks about a girl but soon stops as he is flustered. The two were convicted of money counterfeiting. Although, Magwitch was given double the sentence of Compeyson. This was due to he fact that Compeyson was dressed like a gentleman. Magwitch ended up on a prison ship near the marshes where he was found in chapter 1. Magwitch realises Compeyson is on the ship and attacks him. This causes him to go into solitary confinement. But die to this, he escapes and swims to the marshes where he was found by Pip. Magwitch is also unsure of whether Compeyson is still alive. Herbert than gives a note to Pip discretely telling Pip that Arthur was Miss Havisham’s half brother and that Compeyson was the man who rejected her at her wedding. They then realise that the “rich lady” was Miss Havisham.

Great Expectations: Chapter 41 Summary

Herbert is quite surprised at the thought of a convict in the house. Although he is also surprised at the story of how Pip and his benefactor, Magwitch had helped him all this time. Pip tells Herbert that he doesn’t want to take his money anymore and tries to find a way to pay him back. Herbert suggests that Pip take Magwitch out of England to get him out of trouble. Next morning, Magwitch comes over and Pip learns that he has paid off every debt he has had and every crime he had ever committed.
