Great Expectations: Chapter 18 Summary

Pip is sitting around the fire and listening to Mr Wopsle tell them a story about a recent murder. A weird man asks to speak to Joe and Pip. The man questions Mr Wopsle on his thoughts of the murder and who they believe it was. The man then proceeds to take Joe aside and tell him he will offer him money for Pip. He lets Pip decide if he wants to go, and Pip decides to follow Mr Jaggers.

Great Expectations: Chapter 17 Summary

Pip is getting used to being a blacksmith. Pip goes and studies in the kitchen, while Biddy is listening him read aloud. Pip tries to express his emotions and his feelings to Biddy. Pip tells Biddy that he wants to be a gentleman. Biddy tells him not to wish for something that is not possible. Pip tells her about Estella and Biddy tells him he has no chance. Pip expresses that if he was in love with Biddy there would be no problem.

Great Expectations: Chapter 15 Summary

In Chapter 15, Pip attempts to convince Joe to take him and see Estella. Orlick and Joe get in an argument about who is going to have a holiday Joe then decides everyone will have a holiday, although Miss Joe does’nt want Orlick to get the holiday. Orlick starts to offend Miss Joe but Joe stops him. Joe punches Orlick in the face. Pip goes to find Estella but gets told that she is abroad. Pip see’s Orlick and they head home.  They get home and find Joe has been attacked and is in critical condition.

Great Expectations: Chapter 14 Summary

Pip expresses that he doesn’t like his home. He stares at the marshes and is depressed as he is not allowed to see Estella. He reminiscences the times when he sang the “Old Clem” with Joe and how he sang the same song with Estella and Mrs Havisham. He thinks about Estella.

Great Expectations: Chapter 13 Summary

In Chapter 13, Joe is looking for his best clothes to visit Mrs Havisham’s with Pip. Joe goes to Mrs Havisham’s with Pip and meets Estella. Pip says that Joe Is not like himself as he is wearing his good sunday clothes while he is usually in his blacksmiths uniform. Mrs Havisham throws a few questions about Pip and Joe responds in a nonchalant tone, and attempts to give a higher class tone. He does not convince her and tells them how he gives Pip 25 pounds as a reward. Mrs Havisham sends Pip away with the money. They arrive at Mr Pumblechook’s and Joe makes up a story about Mrs Havisham. Pip is given an official blacksmiths apprentice. At night they all celebrate at the Jolly Bargemen.

Great Expectations: Chapter 12 Summary

Pip grows uneasy over his fight with the boy at Miss Havisham’s estate.  Pip then goes to Miss Havisham’s again and quickly checks the scene of the fight for any blood and then covers some up with some garden mold.  Pip goes to meet Miss Havisham who asks him to push her around in her garden chair. Pip and Miss Havisham discuss a number of topics including what pip plans to do when he grows older to which he replies that he will become apprenticed to Joe as a blacksmith. Miss Havisham also teases pip over his attraction to Estella and then asks them to play cards together. Pip then grows apart from his family very slowly as he notices their flaws and general obnoxious. Pip is planned to be an apprentice to. She then tells Pip to bring Joe on his next visit to the her estate. Pip returns to tell Joe about the invite, which brings about a “rampage” on Mrs Joe’s part which sends Pip to bed and ends the chapter.

Great Expectations: Chapter 11 Summary

Pip heads to Miss Havisham’s house to meet Estella. He waits in a room filled with Miss Havisham’s relatives. They all look at Pip with disgusted looks. Estella appears and guides him to Miss Havisham. He ends up in a room with a long table in the middle and a protruding blob sticking out in the table. Pip can hear mice running and beetles. Pip finds out that it was her wedding feast and the “blob” was a cake. Miss Havisham takes Pip and makes him walk around the room multiple times. Estella and the other relatives go inside the room. He insists that a person named “Matthew Pocket” will stand at the head of the table. Pip finds out it is actually Miss Havishams birthday and her relatives come over every year. Estella comes back into the room and they all stand in silence thinking about her dead body on the table. Pip plays cards with them until he gets bored and goes into the garden. He finds another little boy studying. The boy asks Pip to fight him and he accepts. Pip knocks the boy out and walks away. Estella see’s him and says he can kiss him and he accepts. Pip goes back home.

Great Expectations: Chapter 10 Summary

Pip expresses that he is a common boy and wants to change that. He seeks schooling from Mr Wopsle’s Great Aunt but she is too busy with her own chores and sleeping. Biddy, Pips friend agrees to teach him and also teach the whole village. After school he goes to find Joe and finds Mr Wopsle and a strange man with him.The strange man seems to recognise Pip. Pip joins them and and the man asks him many questions. Suddenly he notices the strange man pull out a file, the file he got for the convict, and stir his drink. When they leave Pip is given a small amount of money by the man. Joe tries to return the money.

Personification in Shard extract

Aditya Chakrabortty’s extract on the shard gives the shard human features to express and advance the users ideas. He says that the Shard is a building that ‘stalks’ the rest of London, while sitting at the top of London overlooking the rest of the skyline and  how have we looked at the increasing gap between the rich and the poor
