Great Expectations: Chapter 28 Summary

Pip decides to leave straight away but decides not to live in Joe’s house, instead he live in the village inn. Pip takes the carriage home and finds two convicts on the train, including the one that gave him the two pound note years ago. Pip is forced to sit in front of this convict. This convict does not recognise Pip and tells him the same story. At the first stop, Pip switches carriages as he is scared the convict will recognise him. Pip arrives at the Blue Boar.

Great Expectations: Chapter 27 Summary

Pip gets a letter from Biddy saying Joe would like to come and visit him. Biddy explains that his sister is still sick but they talk about him and what they think he’s doing. Pip although was not excited to see Joe. He was embarrassed of Joe, a blacksmith, and was relieved he wasn’t showing up at the Pocket’s house. Pip had renovated his apartment and hired a servant although their was nothing for him to do. Joe arrives the next day but is uncomfortable in his apartment. Joe meets Herbert but wont shake his hand. They talk a bit and Pip is relieved when Herbert has to leave. Joe tells Pip that Mr. Wopsle has left the church to become an actor in London. He also realises that Joe keeps calling him “sir”. Joe then tells him that Miss Havisham asked him to tell Pip that Estella wants to see him. Pip suddenly feels relieved.

Great Expectations: Chapter 26 Summary

The next day, they all go and dine at Jagger’s house. Jaggers says a few things and make them start quarrelling among themselves. Pip accuses Drummle of never having repaid Startop for money he had lent him, and Jaggers tell Pip to stay away from Drummle in the future. Pip realises Molly is very quiet and weird. Mr Jaggers at one point grabbed Molly’s arm to show how strong her scarred arms were.

Great Expectations: Chapter 25 Summary

Pip has dinner at Wemmick’s house. Wemmick’s house was a castle built in a town called Walworth. Wemmick asks if he would like to meet his father, and he agrees. Wemmick’s father was death but was very energetic. Pip realises Wemmick at work and at home were a completely different person.

Great Expectations: Chapter 24 Summary

Pip and Mr Pocket are talking about Pip’s education. They go and visit Mr Jagger’s for some money first, they arrive and he says Pip can have 20 pounds. Wemmick gives Pip the money and takes him on a tour of the office. Pip see’s some sculptures and asks about the story behind them. Wemmick explains, they portray two criminals who were sentenced to death. After they were killed, the casts were made of their faces. Wemmick shows Pip the jewels that the criminals gave him on the night of their death. Wemmick tells Pip he’s welcome to come have dinner at his house whenever. He warns Pip that Jaggers will be inviting him to his place soon too. They head out to the courthouse to watch Mr Jaggers.

Great Expectations: Chapter 23 Summary

Mr Pocket warmly welcomes Pip but not so warmly his wife. Mrs Pocket is only interested in her father as her father was a knight. Pip meets two other students that he will be studying with, Drummle and Startop. Pip figures out that the Pocket’s house were basically run by servants, Flopson and Miller. The servants were like they were in charge and ordered Mrs Pocket around. Mr Pocket is a great scholar but Pip soon learns from the neighbour, Mrs. Coiler, that Mrs Pocket hates that her husband has to make a living by teaching others. Not many people like Mrs Coiler as people find her weird. The seven children are then called to have dinner and Flopson lines them up. Mrs Pocket wants to hold the baby but the baby nearly slips underneath the table and hits his head. Mrs Pocket talks to Drummle about her father being a knight, while the baby starts to cry. Jane Pocket goes over to comfort the baby but Mrs. Pocket shouts at her and tells her to go and lie down. Mr Pocket gives each of his children one shilling. Although the family is crazy, Pip enjoys it and they go rowing every evening. One day, while Mr and Mrs Pocket are sitting in the kitchen, a servant tells them that the cook is drunk and passed out in the kitchen. Mr pocket goes down to have a look. He tells the wife and she is extremely angry and defends the cook. The reason was because the cook had always told her she was fit to be a duchess.

Great Expectations: Chapter 22 Summary

He realises Mr Pocket Junior is in fact Herbert. Herbert asks Pip to forgive him for beating him up at Miss Havisham’s place. Herbert was in the same situation and was used as Estella’s playmate before Pip. Herbert tells Pip his Dad will be Pip’s new tutor. Pip knows that Herbert is a gentlemen and will teach Pip. Herbert decides to give Pip a nickname; Handel. They have dinner and Pip is thrilled to be by himself with Herbert. Pip asks Herbert to tell him of Miss Havisham. Herbert tells Pip that Miss Havisham was a spoiled only child and was told that she had a half brother named Arthur when her mother in law died. Ms Havisham and Arthur did not like each other at all. When her dad died, he left Arthur a big fortune while Miss Havisham was left with even more. Miss Havisham was now rich but fell in love with the completely wrong man. He convince Ms Havisham to buy out Arthur’s share of the brewery. Herbert’s Dad saw through this man and told her to leave him. On their wedding day, Ms Havisham received a letter from him calling the whole thing off. Miss Havisham got very angry and fell ill. Arthur had meant to rob Miss Havisham and all her fortune. That was the end of Herbert’s recount of her story. Pip asks about Estella but Herbert says he does not know much about her. Pip questions Herberts job and Herbert responded “capitalist—an insurer of ships”. Although, he explains that he is waiting for his big break where he will earn alot of money. Pip loves the idea but thinks he will never become rich and successful.

Pip cant help but think of Joe. They decide to head to Herberts home in Hammersmith. They arrive and find Herberts 7 siblings tumbling on the lawn. They find Herbert’s mother reading a book intensely. She asks how Pip’s mother is doing but before Pip could answer, her youngest child was placed on her lap by the servants and she had to figure out how to hold him. Mrs. Pocket orders everyone to go and nap and the children go into their room. Mr Pocket arrives home soon after.

 

Great Expectations: Chapter 21 Summary

Wemmick comes to take Pip off and discovers that he has alot of mourning rings. Wemmick and Pip arrive at Barnard’s Inn and is disappointed by the aesthetics of it. They head up to his apartment and find a note by Mr Pocket Jr saying he will be right back. Wemmick leaves and they shake hands. Mr Pocket Jr arrives and gives Pip strawberries as a gift. Pip is surprised by this act of kindness. He then realises that Mr Pocket Jr is actually a really nice person. Mr Pocket Jr tells him his situation is not that good and his father doesn’t make much money. He promises to give Pip a tour of the city in the morning. After a while, they realise that they know each other.

Great Expectations: Chapter 20 Summary

After the five hour carriage, Pip arrives in London and decides that London is not as good as he thought. The carriage driver delivers Pip to Mr Jaggers office and tells him how afraid he is of Mr Jaggers. A clerk comes outside and greets Pip while also telling him that Mr Jaggers is in court.Their are many people waiting for Mr Jaggers and they wait in the office.

Great Expectations: Chapter 19 Summary

Pip is excited for his trip to London and become a “gentleman”. Pip tells Joe he will never forget him. Pip and Biddy get into a fight after Pip tells Biddy to teach everything he knows to Joe. Pip then calls Biddy Jealous.He visits Ms Havisham who he believes was the reason this happened. On the night, Pip had a bad dream and started crying.
